What Is a Smoked Gin and Tonic?

A Smoked Gin and Tonic is similar to a regular gin and tonic but with the dramatic effect of smoke. The sweet flavors from the honey and orange slices combined with the smoked gin and tonic water create a perfectly refreshing cocktail. Plus, this recipe is super easy to make. You don’t need any fancy equipment unless you already have it. And you can make this smoked cocktail in 10 minutes! What’s not to love?

What You Need to Make a Smoked Gin Cocktail

  • Ice
  • Orange Slices
  • Fresh Rosemary Sprigs
  • Spiced Bees Knees Honey You can use regular honey as well.
  • Smoked Gin – We used Black Button Barrel Reserve Gin.
  • Tonic Water

Tools

  • Wood chips (we use Western Wood BBQ smoking chips, oak, or cherry for this recipe) 
  • Wood plank for smoking 
  • Torch
  • Glass Highball or coupe
  • Small, heavy skillet
  • Cooking Spray

How to Make This Gin and Tonic Recipe

While a bit more involved than your average cocktail, it is every bit worth it. Heat a small, heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Spray with cooking spray and char the oranges for 2 to 4 minutes a side. Alternatively, a kitchen torch or grill works for this as well.

Quickly toss the rosemary sprig in the same pan until fragrant, 30 seconds. Add ice to a highball glass. Muddle 1 orange slice and a bit of rosemary. 

Put a wooden plank on a safe surface, add wood chips, and use a torch to light them up. Quickly turn a glass upside down over the smoking wood chips to keep the smoke inside. Leave it like that for about 30 seconds to soak up the smoky flavor.

Add the honey, gin and tonic.

Stir to dissolve the honey and garnish with a fresh charred orange slice and toasted rosemary sprig.

  • Swap out the honey for simple syrup.
  • For more flavor, add some orange bitters or Angostura bitters!

    I agree, fantastic photography! The cocktail is pretty fantastic as well!! The only thing I did differently was muddle before adding the ice – which was probably a typo anyway.

    1. We used Black Button Barrel Reserve Gin which we found in NY.
