What is your favorite Friday night cocktail?

I love trying new things and exploring new liqueurs and flavors after a long week. Sadly, I am more prone to order one of these sweet rum-filled creations instead of the hundreds of craft beers that we have access to all of the time.

The benefit is when mixed right, one of these Blue Whale cocktails or other fun drinks is hands down delicious. The downside… when they aren’t mixed well… they are just… let’s be honest, sugary and gross.

This is why we can come home and mix these cocktails on our own, and create a little happy hour magic of our own.

This blue whale recipe is perfect for Friday night porch sitting or chilling around the pool all afternoon. (Obvs, if you’re over 21 – otherwise, just drop some blue food dye in some 7UP for the wee little).

Grab a glass, and let’s escape somewhere until Monday.

What You Need

Aside from your three key ingredients, you’ll need a cobbler-style cocktail shaker and ice.  Optional items that can guide you in your drink-slinging quest; a julep strainer, barspoon and jigger. A citrus juicer comes in handy if you are using fresh fruit for your juice.

How to Make A Blue Whale

Hop down for the easy recipe, but really for a blue whale, you mix rum and blue curacao in a shaker over ice with a splash of citrus-based juice. In this case we use pineapple but feel free to get creative. Orange juice would be delicious and a splash of lemon juice or even lime juice, is not out of the question! Shake vigorously and strain over fresh ice.

The citrus-based juice and curacao help to balance the sweetness from the rum for that smooth sip.

You can serve them on the rocks or blend with ice for a slushy.

Want to spruce it up? Garnish with a pineapple or lime wedge.

Can I use Tequila or other base spirits?

I always say the sky’s the limit, but if you use tequila that is technically a blue margarita. I’m all for creativity but changing any of the main ingredients really just makes it a different recipe.

Triple sec is an orange flavored liqueur that would be an amazing addition.

Can I store this blue cocktail?

My response to this will almost always be that fresher is better, but if you must, you can of course keep it in the refrigerator for a day, but not any longer.

Always give it a good shake before you drink it!
